Education in Chile

According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the education system of Chile is based on the 19th century French and German models. It is regarded as one of the best in Latin America. The Chilean education system is divided into eight years of free basic primary schooling and four years of optional secondary and or vocational education. Students may choose to pursue higher education. The Encyclopedia Britannica also states that nine-tenths of Chileans 15 years of age and older are literate. Private schools are ran by different ethnic and religious groups

Schools  in Chile provide students with a basic education.  When students complete primary school, they are awarded a Primary Leaving Certificate.  When students enter the secondary phase of their education also known as Liceo, this phase focus on preparation for higher education.

Vocational Education

Vocational education in Chile prepares students for industrial or occupational careers.  This training is provided through technical secondary schools, on the job training, and trade schools.  

Higher Education in Chile

In order to successfully complete university education , students are required to take a university selection test.  This test consists of two compulsory tests and more specific exams depending on what the student is studying.   

Higher education  in Chile not only includes colleges and universities but professional schools which prepare students pursuing careers in music, art, law, medicine, and business.   The entrance requirement for most colleges and universities is completion of secondary education. 

The University of Chile is one of the oldest and most prominent universities in Latin America.  Chile operates eight universities.  Two of those universities are operated by the state and six of those universities are private.  Most of the financial assistance comes from the state. 

Libraries in Chile

Libraries in Chile play an important role in Chilean education.  The three main libraries in Chile are the Library of Chile, the Library of Congregation, and the Central Library of the University of Chile.  The National Library of Chile has a vast collection of books and manuscripts.  This collection has either been donated or acquired from various donors.

Music Schools

Chile offers various music schools in its major cities.  The first music school , Music School of Universidad de Chile was set up in 1849.  In 1929, Chile experienced a cultural boom.  The Kinematic School and the Fine Arts School merged into the present day University of Chile Fine Arts Faculty.
